Program Overview:
Ocean Discovery Week: Underwater Drones & Marine Science
The CoastX Ocean Discovery Program is a one-of-a-kind, week-long marine science adventure where middle and high school students don’t just learn about the ocean - they explore it firsthand!
Designed for curious, hands-on learners, students will conduct their research from the deck of the 38’ Coast Guard–certified M/V Utopia, which operates as CoastX’s dedicated “research vessel”. This immersive program blends cutting-edge ocean technology, field research, and unforgettable coastal exploration along the shores of New Hampshire, Maine, and the Piscataqua River.
The week begins at the University of New Hampshire’s Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping (CCOM), where students learn about underwater Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs)—think underwater drones— and gain experience piloting two different robots in UNH’s 2,400 square foot testing pool. This provides a controlled learning environment, or ‘pilot school’, before taking the ROVs out into the waves and currents of the real ocean environment.
Throughout the rest of the week...
• Students deploy drop cameras, conduct plankton tows, collect water-quality data, and investigate marine habitats and harbor ecology
• Activities may include surveying eelgrass beds, studying the local lobster population, searching for ghost fishing gear, and even exploring submerged wrecks.
•The program also includes a full session at the historic Wood Island Life Saving Station, one of CoastX's premiere partners.
• NEW THIS YEAR, The last day will include a trip aboard UNH’s true research vessel, the 48' R/V Gulf Surveyor, to engage and understand the next level of ocean research.
• Students learn basic seamanship, ocean surveying, and scientific mission planning just like professional research teams while working collaboratively to solve challenges and document their findings.
Discovery Week students are led each day on the water by professional ocean engineers, marine scientists, and experienced educators. Their combined expertise gives participants authentic exposure to marine technology, navigation, and scientific fieldwork while building teamwork, confidence, and leadership skills. (See Discovery Week Team link.)
From collecting and examining plankton under microscopes to exploring historic coastal islands and harbors, every day brings a new discovery. Students learn how scientists study ecosystems, monitor marine life, and protect our oceans—while experiencing the excitement of real-world exploration that inspires future pathways in STEM, ocean science, the working waterfront, and the growing blue economy.
Why Parents and Students Love CoastX Discovery Week:
- Real science, real technology, all outdoors on the ocean!
- Expert mentors and guest speakers.
- Emphasis on safety.
- Builds confidence, teamwork, and leadership.
- Inspires further curiosity about personal ocean exploration, academics, or careers.
- True exploration, students may pilot ROVs in places never before seen.
